Mary Katherine Horany born in Pest, Hungary on November 7, 1850. She immigrated with her family to New York in September of 1850. Both of her parents died in 1865. Kate and her siblings were moved around and she ran away from her foster home in St. Louis. In 1874 Kate made her way to Dodge City, Kansas where she was known as Kate Elder. In 1876 she moved to Fort Griffin, Texas where she met Wyatt Earp and began a longtime relationship with Doc Holiday. Kate and Doc set out from Fort Griffin making stops in Trinidad, Colorado, Las Vegas, and New Mexico before meeting up with Wyatt Earp in the Arizona Territory. Kate and Doc then parted ways with her going to Globe, Arizona. Kate's first visit to Tombstone was in July, 1881. She did not return to Tombstone until October, 1881 and stayed with Doc Holiday until he left for Colorado in April, 1882. Although they were thought of as being married, there are no records to prove it. Kate continued her adventurous ways right up until her death in November 2, 1940. Just 5 days short of her 90th birthday she succumbed to Coronary Heart Disease. She was laid to rest in Prescott, Arizona.
