Martha Jane Cannary was born on May 1, 1852 in Princeton, Missouri. She was the oldest of six children and would eventually become the head of her family after the passing of her mother in 1866 and her father in 1867. In 1868 she moved her family to Piedmont, Wyoming where she worked as a cook, dishwasher, dance hall girl, nurse and ox team driver.
In 1874 she found work as a scout at Fort Russell. She was christened Calamity Jane during the Campaign at Goose Creek, Wyoming after saving the life of Captain Egan and successfully getting him back to the Fort. During his recuperation he laughingly said "I name you Calamity Jane, The Heroine of the Plains".
In 1876 she met up with Wild Bill Hickok and Charlie Utter in Deadwood, South Dakota. After Hickok's death, Calamity Jane claimed that they were married and that he was the father of her child. Evidence was found in 1941, confirming that they had  been married in Benson's Landing, Montana Territory in September of 1873.
Calamity Jane joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as a trick shooter in 1893. She died of Pneumonia August 1, 1903 in Terry, South Dakota at the age of 51.
