Born Robert Findley McLaury on March 3, 1848 in Courtwright Center, New York. The family moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa when he was a young boy. In later years he and his brother Tom studied pre-law.

In 1878 Frank and Tom moved to Hereford, Arizona to pursue the cattle business. There they met Ike Clanton and would become associated with the Clanton family, which owned one of the largest cattle operations in Arizona. Two years later he and brother Tom would meet up with Curly Bill Brocius in Tombstone, Arizona. There he met his fate in the Gunfight at the OK Corral - October 26, 1881.
