John Wilson Vermillion, better known as Texas Jack, was born in 1842 in Russell County, Virginia. He was the second of twelve children born to William and Nancy Vermillion Nee Owens. He was a Confederate Civil War Veteran and fought under General J.E.B. Stuart. In 1865 he and his wife moved to Missouri where he became Territorial Marshal for the eastern section of Missouri.
Jack's wife and two children died of Diphtheria in the epidemic that hit Missouri in 1869. In 1870 he moved to Kansas, and then to Tombstone, Arizona Territory, where he met up with the Earps and Doc Holiday. Virgil hired Texas Jack as a deputy to help quell the looting that took place after the fire of 1881. In March of 1882 he joined and rode with The Vendetta Posse. In 1883 he was involved in the Dodge City War. In 1888 he joined the Jefferson Randolph Soapy Smith Gang.
In his later years he returned to Virginia and worked as a Methodist Preacher. Although there are many accounts of his death, his family said he died in 1911 in the town of Mendeta, Virginia.
