Born Thomas McLaury in Courtright Center, New York, June 30, 1853. His family moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa where he and his brother studied law. Tom and Brother Frank moved to Hereford, Arizona where they met Ike Clanton and his family, and were introduced to the cattle business. In 1879 Tom and Frank were successful in the cattle business and purchased land at Soldiers Hole, near Tombstone, Arizona. It was while in Tombstone they met Curly Bill Brocius and became associated with the infamous Cowboys.

Although Tom was referred to as a gunfighter, he had never been in a gunfight until October 26, 1881. There he, his brother Frank and Billy Clanton met there fate.
